LifeRing’s First Foreign Language Chat Meeting
LifeRing has added a Swedish language meeting to it’s Online Chat schedule. The meeting is on Sundays at 10 p.m., CET (Central European Time). The meeting will be convened by Lars B., who has been very successful in helping LifeRing get a firm footing in Sweden. The new meeting is another step forward.
LifeRing Online: You’ve Got Mail!
Several days ago, the first in a series of messages was posted about LifeRing Online. That was about Chat (click here to see it). Today, we’ll take a look at E-mail groups. There are two large LifeRing email groups devoted to recovery support: LSRmail, with about 300 members, and LSRsafe, with about 200. The numbers…
National Alcohol Screening Day
Today, April 7, 2011, is National Alcohol Screening Day in the United States. The event encourages people who use alcohol to consider their personal drinking patterns to determine if they have an alcohol use problem. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) estimates that, in 2009, 19.3 million individuals needed treatment for alcohol.…
Drinking on the Job as an Employee Benefit?
The San Francisco Chronicle, the major newspaper in the Bay Area, carried an article in its Sunday edition that raises some concerns about the culture surrounding the high tech industries that often seem to be re-shaping the world. The article, entitled “Bar’s open at Startups,” reports that at prominent companies such as Twitter and Yelp…

Alcohol is a causal factor in…

The essay is titled “Addicts are NOT Powerless — the Trick is Knowing Where the Power Is.” The essay explores…
Marty N., Still A Voice For Sobriety
Former CEO Marty N. is no longer at the head of LifeRing, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still active in promoting sobriety. You can visit his blog at http://newrecovery.blogspot.com/ and see what he has to say, perhaps by starting with this recent post about the value of even relatively light exercise in dealing with the…
Why We Do What We Do
After spending the morning dealing with the frustrating details (‘whaddaya mean we don’t have the right envelopes!?”) of getting out a mailing to potential LifeRing donors, it was more than heartening to receive a card in the mail from “The Albuquerque Group” with the message, “Dear LifeRing, Thanks for all you do to provide a…
Is There Such a Thing as ‘Food Addiction’?
LifeRing only concerns itself with substance abuse, not other kinds of ‘behavioral’ addictions, like gambling or sex. But many of our members, like much of the population, have problems with food, and overeating, that feel similar in some ways to our experiences with alcohol or drugs. An article in The Huffington Post, an on-line magazine,…
